“‘Now is the proper time for a foreigner to say a word’: The Rhetorical Agency of Hilda Satt Polacheck”
Journal of American Ethnic History, Fall 2019
In this article, Zachary Bishop and his former English professor at Elmhurst College, Bridget K. O’Rourke, explore the life and writing of Hilda Satt Polacheck, the author of the only known memoir of Jane Addams’ Hull-House written by an immigrant woman. Bishop and O’Rourke consider how Polacheck used her memoir to criticize the United States government’s actions during the Red Scare of the 1950s.
